The 'Nritta Nattuvangam' workshop is specially designed on the works of the mathematical wizard & talal vidwan Late Kalaimamani Guru Shri T.S. Kadhirvellu Pillai, and is based on his system of tala training & the unusual technique of cross-tempi rhythm.  A genius, his unique approach & interpretation of rhythm has enriched the 'nritta' aspect of Bharat Natyam.  In fact, he is regarded as one of the greatest nattuvanars on the contemporary scene who created some of the most complex & intricate rhythmic compositions ever seen in a Bharat Natyam recital. The style is distinguished by the unique & challenging method of weaving recitative syllables with the rhythmic dynamics in 'nritta' choreography.

The workshop is unusual in its approach as it seeks to impart a methodology or system rather than just a repertoire of items. The training thus focuses on dual aspect of dance practical (nritta) & tala understanding simultaneously. The unique items not only enrich the repertoire of the student but more importantly become the means through which a different perspective to rhythm is unfolded.  Also the workshop offers a systematic training in nattuvangam (the art of conducting a performance through the playing of the cymbals).
The workshop is specially designed for dancers who wish to take up teaching dance and for whom a strong foundation in Tala & Nattuvangam is an essential perquisite.

The workshop is designed by one of his senior-most disciple Smt. Prakriti Bhaskar, who now carries forth her guru's legacy. Having trained extensively for 14 years, imbibing his style  & technique, her long association with the maestro has enabled her to create a distinct methodology for tala training & nattuvangam based on her guru's system. The 'Nritta - Nattuvangam' workshop is created with the hope of sharing the vision & insights of this maestro, with serious students of dance & dance teachers. It hopes to enrich & add another dimension to their understanding of the art form.
